Buckley Street – Level Crossing Removal Project

The Level Crossing Removal Project that involved major construction to remove the level crossing at Buckley Street in Essendon consisted of the removal of the crossing, and building a road underpass beneath the railway line, that also included new service roads to maintain local access.

Buckley Street is one of the key arterial roads in Melbourne’s inner north west, connecting Keilor and Avondale Heights in the west with Mt Alexander Road in the east.

Before the level crossing was removed, the boom gates were down for about 78 minutes during the morning peak, impacting the 11,000 vehicles that used the road each day.

CDR provided geotechnical testing throughout both day and night works across the corridor to a number of contractors, including the principal contractor John Holland. These works required a number of contractors to work closely together within a high-profile location and to tight deadlines.
